Faculty members of the UIS Department of Psychology are expected to be active scholars and mentor undergraduates in the generation of new scientific knowledge by means of scholarship. In an attempt to facilitate such scholarship the Department has established a participant pool of available research participants.
The psychology bachelor’s degree is open to all UIS students and transfer students who have met the entrance requirements for admission to UIS. In addition, all students wishing to be admitted to the Psychology Major must first successfully complete PSY 201 Principles of Psychology (or equivalent) with a grade of C (2.0) or better.
The UIS Psychology Department has established the following 16 undergraduate learning goals for psychology majors, based upon faculty review of the APA Task Force recommendations (see below) and current curriculum.
Upon successful completion of the program, psychology majors should be able to:
Psychology majors have multiple opportunities to work directly with department faculty on research or conduct their own research projects and even publish their findings in professional journals. Student researchers have access to state-of-the-art technologies including a psychology laboratory, a biofeedback center and clinical observation suites for audio and videotaping of dyadic or group activities.
Letters of recommendation are very important as you apply for graduate school and jobs. Before you ask a faculty member to write a letter you should consider how well the faculty member knows you and in what capacity (e.g., class? research? Psychology Club?). It is advisable to ask the faculty member if they feel that they can write you a good letter.
The Psychology department uses a Shared Model of advising. As a Psychology major you will have two advisors – a faculty member and a professional advisor. Any faculty member in the department can serve as your faculty advisor.
The Psychology Department facilities in University Hall include a psychology lab, a computer lab, graduate assistants’ offices, an observation area fitted with multimedia equipment, and a psychology reading room.
