The COLRS Annual Impact Report for AY 2023-2024 is now live!
COLRS strengthened campus community partnerships during the academic year, supporting faculty, staff, and students near and far.
We appreciate our faculty and staff partners for your contributions to online teaching and learning. Our work would not be possible without your dedication to our students and your innovative ideas.

What are captions?
According to W3C, “captions are a text version of the speech and non-speech audio information needed to understand the content.” Captions differ from an audio transcript in that they are synchronized with the audio.
While some parts of the world use the terms “captions” and “subtitles” interchangeably, W3C provides differentiation between these terms as follows:
What is an Accessible Link?
Links are one of the foundational elements of digital content. They are found on websites, online courses, apps, and email. Accessible links connect concise and descriptive text to a website or file. They make it easier for everyone to navigate and consume content.
Taylor Lester is the program coordinator for the Center for Online Learning, Research and Service (COLRS).
Can you give me a brief timeline of how your career led you to UIS?
What is Alternative Text?
Alternative text is a concise description of an image embedded within a webpage’s code. The description is read aloud to visually-impaired viewers using a screen reader. Its primary purpose is to provide context and meaning to users who cannot see the image. Alt text also provides a fallback in case the image fails to load and plays a role in search engine results.
