The UIS Capital Scholars Honors Program is a competitive program that invites incoming first-year students to participate starting in the fall semester. The average GPA of CAP Honors students is 3.725. This honors program includes a residential component that requires honors students to live on campus for their first two years.
Admission is open to high school graduates who have demonstrated high academic achievement and a potential for creativity and leadership. Students admitted to the program are expected to have excellent written and oral communication skills and to want a challenging intellectual experience during their college years.
Students are selected based on a holistic evaluation of the following:
- Unweighted grade-point average of 3.25 or higher for admission consideration
- Class rank (if applicable)
- Creative and leadership potential
- School and/or community involvement
- Sample essay
Students are encouraged to apply to UIS through the regular UIS application or the Common App. Students who are admitted to UIS and meet honors admissions criteria will have their applications automatically sent to the Honors Program for review.
A personal or telephone interview with a member of the admissions committee (made up of Capital Scholars Honors faculty and administrators) may also be part of the selection process.
