Using a Search Firm

In compliance with Illinois Law, 110 ILCS 305/80, the use of search firms at the University of Illinois is limited to searches for the President of the University and when the President and Board of Trustees demonstrate a justifiable need. 

Accordingly, searches involving a search firm shall conform to one or more of the following criteria:

Pre-Employment Physical Agility and Lifting Policy

Purpose

The University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) recognizes that select positions require physically demanding activities. In order to reduce the risk of serious injury in the performance of these duties and to promote a healthy and safe work environment for UIS, a physical agility and lifting test is required prior to employment or movement into a position that includes a significant required physical component in the job duties.

Preemployment Drug Screening Policy

Purpose

The University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) is committed to providing faculty, staff and students with a safe, healthy and drug-free workplace. UIS recognizes that select positions require the performance of potentially hazardous activities. Candidates for these positions are required to undergo a drug screening prior to employment in the position.

Background Checks

I. Purpose

In an effort to provide a safe and secure environment for all students, employees and visitors at the University of Illinois System; to safeguard the U of I System’s integrity, property and resources; and to help ascertain suitability for employment, the U of I System has established the following Policy for conducting background checks (1) for new employees and (2) for current employees transitioning into certain positions that are security sensitive and/or will be working with minors.

Release Time

UIS Release Time Policy

  • If the hours of the event fall within an employee's normal work day, the employee may attend if he/she receives permission from his/her supervisor.
  • If the hours of the event fall outside an employee's normal work day the employee may adjust his/her schedule for that day to attend the event subject to supervisor approval.

Reporting Policy for The State Officials and Employees Ethics Act

The State Officials and Employees Ethics Act (5 ILCS 430) requires the Illinois public university governing boards in coordination with the Illinois Board of Higher Education to demonstrate they have adopted and implemented for all employees under their respective jurisdiction and control specific personnel policies relating to the documentation of official State business. Further, this Act requires State employees to periodically submit records documenting the total amount of time spent each day on official State business to the nearest quarter hour (5 ILCS 430/5-5).

Reporting Fraud or Misconduct, Whistleblower Protection, and Investigations

The purpose of this policy is:

  1. to define employee and management responsibility for reporting fraud, potential or actual, or misconduct and to establish procedures for addressing wrongful conduct; and
  2. to protect any employee who engages in good faith disclosure of alleged wrongful conduct to a designated University of Illinois system official or public body.

Protection of Minors

All university-sponsored events involving minors must go through the Protection of Minors review process.

I. UIS Process for Events

To ensure the safety of minors while involved in university activities, no adult may be part of any event where they would be in close contact with minors who are not enrolled as university students, without first submitting to and passing a criminal background and sex offender registry check unless such checks have been performed within the past two years and are on file with UIS Human Resources.
