Starting college is exciting, but it can also be a little overwhelming. It’s a new beginning on your own. You’re in a new place, meeting new people and adjusting to a new routine. At UIS, we aim to help make your first year a memorable one by providing helpful tips about college life that every first year should know!

Dorm Life = Germ Life

Living in a residence hall is fun, but it also means being around a lot of people. Colds, the flu and other “dorm diseases” can spread fast. Wash your hands often and keep your space and personal belongings clean. If you're not feeling well, visit Health Services for care and advice.

You’ll Have More Free Time Than You Think

Your schedule in college will differ from what you’re used to from high school since you won’t be in class all day. However, that doesn’t mean you’re free all the time! It’s up to you to manage your time best. Create a weekly schedule that includes time for class, studying, meals, extracurricular activities and sleep. Need advice on how to manage your time well as a first-year student? The Center for Academic Success and Advising is an excellent resource to help get you started.

You’re in Charge Now

College means taking responsibility for yourself. No one is going to constantly remind you to turn in your homework or complete important tasks outside of class. How can you start taking charge on the first day you arrive on campus? Stay on top of deadlines by writing in a planner or using the calendar app on your phone, especially when you need to complete something by a specific time. Don’t forget to check Canvas and your UIS email daily!

Talk to Your Professors

Your professors are here to help you grow and learn. Don’t be afraid to go to office hours, introduce yourself and ask questions. Outside of coursework, your professors are your strongest advocates. If you build up rapport, they can write you recommendation letters for jobs, internships and graduate school. The more they know you, the more they can help!

Making Friends Takes Time

Everyone wants to make friends in college. However, forming those connections doesn't always happen right away, and that’s okay! Take the first step toward meeting other people by getting involved in student activities, joining a registered student organization or club and attending campus events. Kindness goes a long way, too. Say hello to the people sitting near you in class or invite your roommate to eat with you at the Student Union. Small steps lead to strong friendships.

Establish Healthy Habits

College can change your daily routine. As the semester progresses, you might find yourself eating more fast food or skipping workouts. Try to eat balanced meals, drink plenty of water and stay physically active. UIS has the state-of-the-art Recreation and Athletic Center (TRAC), which is available free of charge to students. Join a fitness class, participate in an intramural sport or take a walk throughout the quad to stay moving. Campus Recreation also offers a wide range of activities to help you stay at your best while having fun.

It’s Okay to Miss Class—Sometimes

If you’re sick or have an emergency, you’re not required to go to class. However, don’t just disappear. Email your professors to explain why you’re missing class and let them know you’re keeping up with your work. Ask a classmate for notes and check Canvas for updates so you can still complete assignments on time. A few excused absences aren’t going to significantly impact your grades. Just be mindful that you don’t miss class too much.

College Students Love Late Nights

Many college students stay up late studying or hanging out with friends. While it’s okay to be a night owl, you still need to make sure you’re getting enough sleep. Try to get 7 to 8 hours of rest each night. Sleep helps your brain, mood and grades. If you’re having trouble balancing a busy schedule or losing sleep because of your mental health, the Counseling Center provides free services and support.

What Does a Typical Week Look Like?

A first-year college student’s schedule might look like this:

  • Classes: 12 to 15 hours a week (about 4 to 5 classes)
  • Study Time: 2 to 3 hours per class, per week
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner (don’t skip!)
  • Exercise: 2 to 3 times a week
  • Extracurriculars: Club meetings, events, work, or just hanging out
  • Sleep: 7 to 8 hours each night

This schedule might seem like a lot, but with good planning, it all fits in.
