DEI Course Design Rubric with developers from University of California System
Over the past two years, a working group of the University of California Instructional Design and Faculty Support (IDFS) community of practice has developed a DEI Course Redesign Rubric. The goal is to share the rubric with as many faculty and instructional designers as possible across higher education, so as to foster thoughtful dialogue and careful, DEI-informed improvements to courses and to teaching and learning. - (Educause March 13, 2023)

Nick and Alan will lead us through the Framework with some background on how it came about, an overview of the framework, some examples of how it is being used in the University of California system followed by some interactive activities.
Nicholas (Nick) Mattos is an instructional designer with the Digital Learning Hub at UC San Diego where he develops online and hybrid courses. His career in higher education spans a variety of fields including faculty development, instructional technology, and multimedia arts. Nick has presented and published work on equity, diversity, and inclusion, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), digital literacy, and co-chaired the UC Instructional Design and Faculty Support (IDFS) community of practice 2020-21.
Alan Roper holds the position of Academic Technology Manager at UCLA’s Bruin Learn Center of Excellence. In this role, he leads a team of dedicated academic technologists who offer support and services for the Bruin Learn ecosystem. Additionally, he is actively involved in a project for the California Education Learning Lab and UC Regent Lark Park, facilitating the development of inclusive STEM curriculum and tools.
Alan Roper began his UC career at UC Berkeley as head of instructional design at the School of Law. He then moved to the UC President’s office to manage the Bending the Curve project which produced a transdisciplinary learning program shared with all campuses and internationally.
Dr. Roper is a three-time recipient of the UC President’s Star Award for innovation in pedagogy and online learning. He also teaches doctoral research and writing at Golden Gate University earning the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty of the Year Award in 2019, and Distinguished Adjunct Professor award 2021, and 2023.
