What does this mean?

On December 13, 2022, UIS will be implementing 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) to better protect both you and the university from unauthorized access to your personal data stored in the university's enterprise systems. UIS will be requiring a second layer of security to access your University account making it difficult for an unauthorized person to access your information. 2FA provides better account protection than merely using a password. If your password is stolen or compromised, having 2FA set up will require the thief to also have possession of your registered device in order to access your account. Merely having your pin and password is no longer enough to change your personal information.

What should I do to prepare?

We recommend that prior to December 13, 2022 you login to the NetID Center to check your whether or not you need to setup 2FA for your account or simply verify your 2FA options.

If you need to setup 2FA for your account in the NetID Center, select the button that says "Setup 2FA" and begin the setup process. (It is recommend that you do this on campus, but if you are unable to please refer to the University of Illinois System's Answer and Support article: "2FA, How do I enroll in 2-Factor Authentication from off campus?"). For more information on the setup process, please view the University of Illinois System's Answer and Support article: "2FA, How to Set Up?".

If you have already setup 2FA for your account, we encourage you to select the button that says "Manage my 2FA" to verify that the phone numbers and devices are still ones that you have access to. For more information on managing your 2FA options, please view the University of Illinois System's Answer and Support article: "2FA, How to manage your devices".

Tip: The fastest and easiest way to approve a 2FA request to login to your account is to use the Duo Mobile app that can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store on your smartphone. Details on setting this up can be found in the University of Illinois System's Answer and Support article: "2FA, How to Set Up?"

If you have questions or need additional support setting up 2-Factor Authentication with your University of Illinois Springfield account, please contact the ITS Help Desk by calling (217) 206-6000, emailing techsupport@uis.edu, or stopping by in person in the Lower Level Lounge on the First Floor of the Brookens Building.
