The UIS baseball team heads to Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) for a four-game GLVC series this weekend, with doubleheaders scheduled for both Friday and Saturday due to inclement weather in the forecast for Sunday.
Illinois Springfield (8-9, 3-4 GLVC)
The Prairie Stars are coming off a shortened three-game GLVC series against Indianapolis after cold weather prevented the teams from completing the series on Sunday. UIS won Friday's nine-inning opener 6-3 behind a strong start from Esteban Hernandez and Seth Masters' third consecutive save. However, the Stars fell in both games of Saturday's doubleheader—dropping a closely contested 10-6 decision before being shut out 3-0. The canceled game will not be rescheduled per GLVC policy, giving the series win to the Greyhounds.
Mark Kattula continues to lead UIS offensively with 25 hits, five doubles, two home runs, and a .391 batting average. Ty Hollandsworth has been a key contributor at .333 with 18 hits, including seven for extra bases, while Ethan Bowers is batting .317 and is 8-for-9 in stolen base attempts.
On the mound, Esteban Hernandez, Kannon Walker, and Adam Wibbenmeyer each have two wins this season, while Ben Benoit and Jack Tobin have picked up one victory apiece.
The Prairie Stars are 4-2 on the road this season, having played road games in February against Tusculum and Thomas More. This series marks the team's first GLVC road test of the spring.
Missouri-St. Louis (16-7, 6-2 GLVC)
UMSL enters the series riding high after a dominant four-game sweep of Lincoln, where the Tritons scored 49 runs across the series. Their victories included a 15-3 run-rule win, a 10-2 victory, a 6-2 extra-inning contest, and an 18-1 run-rule finale.
Barrett Rose leads the Tritons with 32 hits, including 16 doubles, while batting .395. Andrew Buescher follows closely with 30 hits and a .353 average, and five other UMSL hitters are batting above .300.
On the mound, Zach Haygood is 2-0 across six starts with a 5.71 ERA and 29 strikeouts. Dustin Hagens has recorded 44 strikeouts and carries a 4.56 ERA with a 1-1 record, while reliever Cody Brooks has been a reliable arm out of the bullpen, posting a 4-1 record with a 3.00 ERA.
UMSL's two other official GLVC wins came in a series split with Missouri S&T, and they also swept a non-conference doubleheader against McKendree in late February.

UIS leads the all-time series against UMSL 18-16 and is on a 12-game winning streak dating back to 2018.
