The Illinois Springfield baseball team continues GLVC play this weekend, hosting Indianapolis for a four-game series at the UIS Baseball Field. The series opens Friday at 1:00 p.m., followed by a pair of seven-inning games on Saturday at noon and 3:00 p.m. The series finale is set for Sunday at noon.
Illinois Springfield (7-7, 2-2 GLVC)
The Prairie Stars split their opening GLVC series with Lewis last weekend. UIS won the first game 8-7, outscoring the Flyers in the middle innings to spark a three-game win streak. The first game of Saturday's doubleheader was a pitcher's duel, with Lewis going up 2-0 before UIS tied it on an Ivan Dahlberg two-run homer, then walked it off with a single in the eighth. Lewis took the second game of the day 8-6. The series concluded Sunday with a 19-9 Lewis victory, with both teams generating plenty of offense.
Ty Hollandsworth is batting .375 with seven extra-base hits and 10 RBIs this spring. Mark Kattula had a nine-hit weekend against Lewis and is hitting .365 overall. Newcomer Michael Paule is batting .300 and shares the team lead with Mack Clark with five doubles.
Relievers Kannon Walker and Adam Wibbenmeyer have been effective for UIS, with respective ERAs of 6.14 and 6.00. Ben Benoit is the team's standout starter with a 3.37 ERA and a win against Thomas More.
Indianapolis (6-9, 0-0 GLVC)
The Greyhounds will open GLVC play at the UIS Baseball Field this weekend after completing four non-conference series this spring. UIndy most recently won one of four games against Davenport, a high-scoring 13-12 victory.
Outfielder Austin Bode leads the Greyhounds at the plate, batting .365 with 19 hits, including 10 doubles. Easton Good (.340), Luke Smock (.326), and Chase Mason (.304) are also hitting above .300.
On the mound, Gabe Dawson is 2-2 in four starts with a 5.32 ERA, while Diego Cardenas is 1-0 with a 6.55 ERA over significant innings pitched. Relief pitcher Austin Bestul is 2-1 with a 15.58 ERA.
UIndy was the 2024 NCAA DII Midwest Regional champion, ending its season at the NCAA DII Championship.
UIndy took three of four games in last year's series in Springfield, winning 4-3, 4-1, and 7-4, while dropping the third game 8-6.
