Teaching and Learning during the Covid Pandemic
When the COVID-19 pandemic exploded across the globe in the spring of 2020 and continued into 2021, colleges and university campuses closed, face-to-face classes were moved online, and instructors and students struggled with learning at a distance. Perhaps most significantly, instructors struggled to maintain the connections with students that support learning. In the AY 2024-25, Emily Boles (COLRS), Kara McElwrath (ITS), and Jennifer Martin (SoE) conducted a study to learn more about teaching and learning post-COVID, and to investigate what they were all experiencing anecdotally: unprecedented student struggles with academics post-COVID. This CFE presentation will share the results of their study, including survey results (108 UIS faculty members and 224 UIS students), focus group reflections (UIS faculty, staff, and students), and strategies to improve teaching and support students online.
