UIS Community,

We wanted to send out a quick reminder about the importance of being prepared, as severe weather is forecasted for our area later today. While notification systems are in place to send out information, you can also help keep yourself safe. Now is a good time to take a moment to go through steps you can take during an emergency weather event.

  • Remember that during severe weather, it’s important to find the lowest space possible with the fewest number of windows.
  • Keep your cellphone charged. Cellphones not only serve as a form of communication, but many also provide a light source if needed.
  • Use the buddy system. If you or someone in your space have mobility concerns, think ahead. Consider remaining on a lower level if possible to do routine tasks to lessen reliance on elevators or stairs.
  • Sign up for the UIS Rave Alert system to get text message notifications on your phone.

As a reminder, UIS has a quick reference page with information on how to respond during a major incident. Please go to the UIS Disaster Plan page to review considerations for tornados, power outages, reporting criminal activity, medical emergencies, and more.
