The Illinois Springfield women's soccer team opened the 2025 season with a scoreless draw against Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday evening at Panther Field in Owensboro, Ky.
The Prairie Stars created several chances, outshooting the Panthers 14-7 and holding a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Addison Wittenberg led UIS with four shots, including two on target, while McKenna Gahagan added three attempts. Carolyne Mathenia and Mallory Herber also registered shots on goal.
Goalkeepers Gigi Yurevich and Makenna Miller combined for the shutout. Yurevich made one save in the first half before Miller stopped two shots over the final 45 minutes.
Head Coach Scott Myers reflected on the game: "Kentucky Wesleyan is a very athletic team with a solid game plan and they executed it well. We started off strong but missed a few chances that would have given us a strong advantage. I'm really proud of the fight our girls showed throughout the game. We'll take the positives from tonight and get ready for another challenging matchup against West Alabama on Sunday."
UIS (0-0-1) returns to action Sunday when it plays West Alabama at Panther Field in Owensboro. Kickoff is set for noon.
