The UIS women's tennis team wrapped up a strong weekend of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional, highlighted by Alisha Deogaonkar's run to the Flight C singles semifinals.
Singles
Deogaonkar opened play with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tiffin's Ashley Reinhart, then battled back for a 1-6, 6-3, [10-8] win against Sydney Singh of Hillsdale in the Round of 16. She advanced to the semifinals after defeating McKendree's Diana Calzada 6-3, 6-3, and will face Roosevelt's Lara Sener on Monday morning.
Maria Garcia Gama also competed in the Flight C draw, earning a 6-3, 6-1 win over Tiffin's Curstin Hackenburg before falling 6-2, 6-4 to Davenport's Angelica Montano in the Round of 16.
In Flight B singles, Niamh Grogan opened with a hard-fought 7-5, 1-6, [13-11] victory against Quincy's Heidi Navas Almeda, then dropped her Round of 32 match 6-1, 6-3 to Davenport's Addison Lind. Jane Carter fell 6-4, 6-2 to Julia Zlaveta in the opening round and was edged 7-5, 6-4 by Tiffin's Imani Shah in consolation play. Ema Norma Bordean dropped a 6-0, 6-1 result in the opening round and later fell 6-3, 2-6, [10-6] to Roosevelt's Sophie Christie in the consolation round.
In Flight A singles, Cristina Mendoza Romero fell 6-0, 6-0 to Tiffin's Jemimah Choi in the Round of 64 and was defeated 6-1, 6-1 in her consolation match.
Doubles
In doubles play, Carter and Mendoza Romero earned a Flight B opening win (8-6) before falling 8-2 to Grand Valley State in the Round of 16. Deogaonkar and Garcia Gama dropped their opening match 8-0 to Roosevelt but bounced back with an 8-4 victory over Quincy in the consolation draw before an 8-5 loss to Ferris State. Grogan and Bordean fell 8-2 to Rockhurst in Flight A play and later dropped their consolation match 8-5 to Davenport.
