Queertober presents: The Safe Zone program’s mission is to promote awareness and improve the campus climate through educational opportunities that train participants on issues faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals and those with marginalized gender and sexual identities, advocacy and intervention skills, intersectionality, and creating welcoming and supportive spaces for LGBTQIA+ students, those with marginalized gender and sexual identities, student allies, and all members of the UIS community. For more information about the Safe Zone program, check out our website.
Potential members must complete this Fundamentals Session and two advanced sessions (Transgender/Gender, Bi+, Religion, Safe Dating, NCBI Bias & Prejudice Reduction, or History). Upon completing Fundamentals and two advanced sessions, participants become members and receive a Safe Zone sign. To become fully certified, members should complete all advanced sessions. To become Brave Space certified, attendance is required for a Brave Space event, small group dialogue sessions that continue conversation on actionable items. Each advanced session awards you with a star sticker to place on your sign.
This session is conducted through Canvas (meaning it is completely virtual!) and over the span of two weeks. All activities are asynchronous, self-guided modules to complete (approximately 20-40 minutes of time for each of the 6 modules). This course will run from 10/19/25-11/1/25
In order to receive credit for this session, participants must:
- RSVP on UIS Connection by Monday, October 17th, 2025, by 5pm
- Accept the Canvas Safe Zone Fundamentals course invitation
- Complete all modules
