First-generation First-year and Transfer College Students
Welcome First Generation College Students to the University of Illinois Springfield!
While heading to college can be challenging for all students, first-generation students must pursue their educational endeavors alone, without the navigational assistance that their families may be unable to provide. Please know that at UIS, you are not alone. A substantial number of our undergraduate students are among the first generation in their family to attend a four-year college. We offer numerous resources to assist you toward the goal of graduation. You will have the support of faculty and staff who are well-versed in assisting first-generation students.
Who is a First-generation Student at UIS?
The University of Illinois Springfield defines first-generation as “neither parent nor guardian have earned at least a bachelor degree.” First-generation students are diverse in a number of ways. They possess a range of classes, races, ethnicities, cultures, faiths, and sexual identities. Regardless of your background, you will quickly find that at UIS there is a place for you.
