Friday Night Star Party

The UIS Astronomy program hosts in-person Friday Night Star Parties at the UIS Campus Observatory 8-10 pm on Friday nights in September and October.

A Star Party is an open house at the Campus Observatory with the telescopes to share enjoyment of the night sky. The events are free and open for everyone including students, employees and community members. Walk-ups are encouraged and welcome.  People can come and go as they please any time between 8 - 10 pm.

The campus Space & Astronomy Group is composed of faculty, staff, students, and community people who share an interest in outer space, space travel and astronomy.  We have biweekly meetings at the Campus Observatory during the fall and spring semesters where we discuss our interest and plan other fun events to share with the larger community.

Meetings are open to anyone and people should feel free to drop in at any time over the hour.

Perseid Meteor Shower At Lincoln Memorial Garden

UIS, in partnership with Lincoln Memorial Garden and the Sangamon Astronomical Society, will co-host a star party from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, at Lincoln Memorial Garden, 2301 E. Lake Shore Drive in Springfield.

Telescopes will be set up in Cawley Meadow, offering views of the Moon, planets Jupiter and Mars, and other celestial objects, including star clusters and nebulae. Constellation tours will also be provided.
