The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) seeks an artist or artist team to complete an interactive mural on campus, located in the Admission Lobby area of University Hall. The mural is to be completed during late spring/early summer of 2024.

Artists will be encouraged to propose artwork that brings vibrancy and color to our office, speaks to the University’s history and its future and is attractive to prospective students. Proposals do not need to be representational in nature. Artists are encouraged to design with a short painting window in mind. Selected muralists must be able to execute their design in a 2-4-week span during the spring/summer of 2024.

Mural dimensions: Designs must fit within a 102” X 115”space.

Artist Stipend: $15,000
Paint will be supplied by the artist.
The artist is responsible for providing all tools.
The university will not reimburse for supplies or tools.

Artist Eligibility:
Applications will be accepted from artists or artist teams within a 50-mile radius of Springfield, Illinois. However, priority will be given to artists residing within the Springfield city limits.
Artists must be at least 18 years old.
Must be willing and able to work on a ladder following appropriate safety protocols.
Selection: Designs will be chosen by a panel selected by the Enrollment & Retention Management Division of the University of Illinois Springfield.

Artwork/artists will be selected based on:
Attractiveness of Design.
Appropriateness to an Enrollment and Management Division within a University setting.
Ability to complete the project in 2-4 weeks.
Experience with mural projects (not required but may be a factor in final decision).
References, which will be contacted for all short-listed artists.

Artists will provide and is responsible for:
Painting tools and supplies
Paint
Personal Liability Insurance while working
Artist will be 100% responsible for the design and completion of the mural including priming and sealing the mural
Upkeep of artistic area in the building, cleaning of materials daily, i.e. Leaving area as was when started

Interested artist must provide the following information no later than February 2, 2024:
A full color preliminary concept drawing in Jpeg or PDF format (please, no Lincoln or the mascot Orion)
A single PDF or Word document containing the following:
• Contact information including name, address, phone, email , and website (if applicable)
• Narrative conveying the artistic intent, colors, style of work, etc. not to exceed 1 page
• Timetable for completion of the mural.
• Artist CV/Resumé (if available)
• Artist statement (if available)
• 3 References related specifically to art projects that have been previously completed
• Examples of artist prior public art projects noting location (if available).
• Examples of the artist’s other works (up to 5)
• All document files should include the artists full name
