As part of the University of Illinois Springfield’s ongoing commitment to digital accessibility and compliance, the UIS Web Team has begun distributing weekly accessibility reports to campus units through Siteimprove.
These reports are a key tool in helping units identify, prioritize, and address accessibility issues on their websites as we work toward meeting the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) accessibility compliance deadline of April 2026.
What the Reports Include
Each Siteimprove report provides a detailed overview of accessibility issues identified on a unit’s web pages. These may include items such as:
- Missing or incorrect alternative text
- Heading structure and semantic issues
- Color contrast concerns
- Link and navigation accessibility problems
- Document and media-related accessibility errors
The reports are designed to highlight both critical issues and opportunities for improvement, allowing units to make targeted updates over time.
What Units Need to Do
Units are expected to review their accessibility reports each week and take action to remediate identified issues on their sites. Regular attention to these reports will help prevent issues from accumulating and make progress more manageable.
Addressing accessibility concerns on an ongoing basis:
- Improves the experience for all users
- Reduces last-minute remediation efforts
- Helps ensure compliance well ahead of the deadline
The Web Team and the Office of Digital Accessibility is available to provide guidance, documentation, and support as units work through their reports.
Tracking Progress and Accountability
Accessibility compliance is a shared responsibility across campus. In addition to weekly reporting, the UIS Web Team and campus leadership will be tracking progress at the unit level to ensure steady improvement and accountability.
This tracking helps:
- Monitor overall campus readiness
- Identify areas that may need additional support
- Ensure UIS stays on track to meet the April 2026 compliance deadline
Our Commitment to Accessible Digital Content
Ensuring that UIS websites are accessible to all users—including individuals with disabilities—is a core value and a legal requirement. The weekly Siteimprove reports are an important step in building sustainable accessibility practices across campus.
We appreciate the cooperation and effort of campus units as we work together toward a more inclusive and compliant web presence. Additional resources, training opportunities, and updates will be shared as we continue this work.
If you are having issues remediating documents, contact the Office of Digital Accessibility to request a DART liaison who can assist remediating documents, videos, websites, and other digital content; train staff members; and track department progress in digital accessibility.
