2026 Voluntary Separation Plan

As part of the university’s NorthStar strategic visioning initiative, the University will be offering a 2026 Voluntary Separation Plan (UIS-VSP). Details regarding eligibility and the application process will be shared later this month.

University Travel

Per University policy, business-related travel must be pre-approved, and employees in travel status are expected to use good judgment when incurring travel costs. Business-related international travel must be pre-approved by the Division Head via an updated International Travel Request form. Domestic travel pre-approval should now be submitted via Emburse (formerly Chrome River). Please refer to the International Travel on University Business website for more information.

Protection of Minors Reminder

With the start of a new semester, we wanted to remind employees to submit an electronic event form for events involving minors on campus. We encourage the hosting unit to submit the form at least 30 days prior to the event. For more detailed information, please review the Protection of Minors website or contact Paige Lavin at pstuc2@uis.edu.

Training Opportunities

Employee Development Series: Workers' Compensation

The first session of the 2026 Employee Development Series will be Workers' Compensation presented by Courtney Montgomery from System Office. This session will take place January 27, 2026 from 9:00-10:00am. This will be open for all employees to attend and will serve as an overview of workers' compensation policy, the benefits it includes, and the process by which system office administers those benefits. Information also being covered will be how to properly complete the First Report of Injury, best practices for employee injuries, and how departments can reduce their claim costs. This session will have a hybrid format for participants to join online or in person (space for in person attendance to be in campus announcements starting next week).

Leave Presentation Available for Individual Units

UIS HR offers an employee leave of absence presentation that is available to individual units and colleges on an as needed basis to help address the complex leave procedures and process. We encourage each unit’s administration to consider scheduling a training session for their employees to attend on an annual basis on this topic, as leave policies and procedures are updated regularly. This unit-specific training session also offers employees and supervisors the opportunity to ask questions of our HR Leave Coordinator in person and learn more about the benefits available to them, how and when to apply, and guidance on recording leave time in their timekeeping systems (i.e. AVSL, CS VSL, FLRS, etc.). Units can expect to schedule one hour for the presentation and Q&A session. If you’d like to discuss and schedule a training for your unit, please contact Heather Moore at hkimb2@uis.edu or 217-206-7020.

Student Employment Training

Student Employment is in the process of eliminating paper checklists. As we begin to implement an electronic student employment checklist workflow, we are training departments that will be hiring soon. This is an in-person interactive training that will require you to bring your laptop and last approximately 45 minutes. Please email studentemployment@uis.edu to schedule a training session.
