Roots to Roux to Rhythm: Black Storytelling through Cuisine and Music

Join the Black and Diversity Centers from Illinois, UIS, and UIC for Roots to Roux to Rhythm: Black Storytelling through Cuisine & Music, a celebration of centuries of stories through food, music, culture, and identity across the African diaspora. We’ll explore how food connects traditions, politics, and social justice, inspired by Dr. Bobby J. Smith II’s book Food Power Politics. Enjoy live music from esteemed alumna Yanna Cello, blending classical training with trap influences, and join in meaningful conversations about coalition building. Together, we’ll honor our stories and traditions as a source of remembrance and resilience. For questions or any specific accommodations, please contact us at diversity@uis.edu or 217-206-6333. *Open to all UIS students only
