What is the Summer Scholars Program?

The Summer Scholars Program is a unique opportunity at UIS for incoming freshman looking to jumpstart their college career. This program introduces students to college life and allows them to earn up to 6 college credits for FREE by taking 2 summer courses. This program is a great way to learn more about what UIS has to offer, as well as meet friends, find a roommate, and more. 

On-Campus Dates: June 17-June 25

  • Attend classes every day with fellow UIS Summer Scholars
  • Explore campus resources
  • Participate in fun activities EVERY EVENING

Remote Learning Dates: June 26-August 9

  • Continue Summer Classes online using CANVAS
  • Finish the Summer with 6 credits, saving you and your family up to $5,000

Summer Scholars Coursework

Required Course:

  • UNI 103 Academic Success Workshop 

*All students will be enrolled in UNI 103 Academic Success Workshop, which is a course that teaches students how to be a productive college student. 

Courses Offered:

  • MAT 092 Arithmetic Review
  • MAT 094 Beginning Algebra
  • ENG 091 Critical Reading
  • ENG 101 Rhetoric and College Writing 

* Students will be placed into a Math course or English course based on their ACT, SAT, or UIS placement test scores.

Do I need to bring any money?

This program is 100% funded by UIS. Students should only bring spending money for souvenirs from field trips. 

What if I already have college credit for ENG 101?

Ensure that the proper documentation (transcript/ test score) is submitted to Records and Registration at UIS prior to the beginning of the semester. Be sure to notify your academic advisor about this as well. Having English 101 credit means you will take a math course during summer scholars.

What if I already have credit for ENG 102?

Ensure that the proper documentation (transcript/test score) is submitted to Records and Registration at UIS. Be sure to notify to notify your academic advisor about this as well. Having English 102 credit means you will take a math course during summer scholars.

What if I already have credit for a college level math course?

Ensure that the proper documentation (transcript/ test score) is submitted to Records and Registration at UIS. Be sure to notify your academic advisor about this as well. Having college level math credit means you will take an ENG course during summer scholars.

What if I do not need any of the classes being offered, but I still want to participate in the program?

Unfortunately, you cannot participate in this program if you already have credit for college ENG or college math course. This program is NOT for you.

Are there any other classes I can take instead of the ones listed on the Summer Scholars webpage?

NO, the only classes being offered during summers scholars is UNI 103, MAT 092, MAT 094, ENG 091, and ENG 101. 

Does Summer Scholars take away the need to attend Orientation?

No, students must still attend orientation.

What orientation should I attend?

Any student planning to participate in the Summer Scholars program should attend the June 22nd orientation, which takes place during the on-campus portion of the program. 

How do I take the placement test?

All Summer Scholars will take a math placement test once they arrive on campus.

Who is eligible?

  • Incoming first-time, first-year freshmen who have committed to attending UIS in the Fall
  • Students who are not in the Capital Scholars Honors Program at UIS
