The UIS softball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with the Maryville Saints.
GAME ONE (L, 7-3)
- The first game of the day started as a fairly even battle in which UIS scored first and the teams were tied 2-2 by the end of the third inning
- The Saints pushed their lead to 4-2 in the fourth on an error and a single
- UIS played catchup, plating a run on a Kelsie Burrows single in the fifth
- Maryville scored three runs on three hits in the seventh to seal their game one win
- Taylor Zawacki fell to 3-4 with the loss
- Maryville jumped out early but UIS scored three runs on two hits and three walks to trail 4-3 after one inning
- The second inning was scoreless as both teams left two runners stranded
- The Saints increased their lead with a home run in the third
- The next runs were scored in the fifth when Adi Rumler doubled to send Addyson McClure home and Adi Rumler scored on a single by Sophie Margelot to tie the game
- Maryville plated a run in the top of the sixth but Ella Brinkley homered in the bottom of the inning to keep the Stars in it
- UIS kept Maryville off base in the top of the seventh
- Adi Rumler walked, then Sophie Margelot mustered a single with two strikes to send Rumler in and effectively end the game
- Addyson McClure improved to 2-2 with the win
