2020 Illinois Innovation Network Undergraduate Research Day

UIS students were selected to represent #UISedu at the annual Illinois Innovation Network Undergraduate Research Day which was cancelled. These students below were chosen based on their projects at the STARS 2020 Virtual Conference.

2016 University of Illinois Undergraduate Research Day

The third annual University of Illinois Undergraduate Research Day was held at the state capitol on May 5, 2016. Ten students from each of the three campuses of the University of Illinois campuses showcased their scholarly achievements and presented their work to the public. Students also had the opportunity to tour the Illinois state capitol and meet with elected officials.

Students were selected in a competitive process by the Undergraduate Research Steering Committee.  Ashley Park examined the relationship between poverty and adolescent substance use in Illinois with Psychology professor Dr. Sheryl Reminger. Jacob Eikenberry studied the effects of workplace incivility and grit on burnout in domestic violence program employees with Business Administration professor Dr. Benjamin Walsh. Michael Lotspeich researched inter-community conflict to building construction in a rural, consolidated local education agency with Sociology/Anthropology professor Dr. Shoon Lio. David Seidel examined whether geographic ranges predict seedling success in tallgrass prairie restorations with Biology professor Dr. Amy McEuen. Kendra Baber discussed the destruction of archaeological sites and museum by ISIS with Sociology/Anthropology professor Dr. Shoon Lio. Jennifer Hickey researched autism in Illinois with Sociology/Anthropology professor Dr. Shoon Lio. Ashley Hollinshead investigated the optimization of the freshwater denitrification process of heterotrophic bacteria using iron nanoparticles with Chemistry professors Drs. John Martin and Keenan Dungey. Zachary Landes, a visual arts major, created an original artwork entitled “Take It, Don’t Leave It” with Ms. Allison Latcher. John Johnson researched a novel approach to the investigation of solenopsins using high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem and high resolution mass spectometry with Chemistry professor Stephen Johnson. Tyler Phibbs, a visual arts major, created an original artwork entitled “Cheromerican Warrioer” with professor Michael Miller.

The second annual University of Illinois Undergraduate Research Day was held at the state capitol on April 30, 2015. Ten students from each of the three campuses of the University of Illinois campuses showcased their scholarly achievements and presented their work to the public. Students also had the opportunity to tour the Illinois state capitol and meet with elected officials.

Students were selected in a competitive process by the Undergraduate Research Steering Committee. Taylor Traynoff, a legal studies and political major, presented on the significance of the fashions of the Girl Power Movement of the 1990s. Michael Rosenberger, a chemistry major and public health minor, researched the detection of JNK protein antibodies in the perirenal fat tissues of mice. Shelby Jarrett, a chemistry major, investigated the out-of-eclipse variation in the spectroscopy of epsilon aurigae. Matthew Sojka, a chemistry major, examined the physical and chemical trends in Thompson Lake in Lewistown, IL. Sarah Rowlands, a business administration major and MIS and communications minor, studied the direct and interactive effects of perceived overqualification and role overload on work outcomes. Dalton Traina, a global studies major, investigated the role of genHkids, AmeriCorps, and Illinois Public Health Association in creating a healthy generation. Daniel Evertz, a computer science major, studied Java-based object recognition for autonomous robots. Visual art major Jerica Griffin created an original art installation entitled “Shock to the System: African American Public Memory Narratives in Static Shock”. Visual art major Thomas Gebhardt created an original art installation entitled “Drive In”. Visual art major Mariam Said created an original art installation entitled “Unveiling the Hijab”.

The first annual University of Illinois Undergraduate Research Day was held on Thursday, May 1, 2014. Ten students from each of the three campuses of the University of Illinois campuses showcased their scholarly achievements and presented their work to the public. Students also had the opportunity to tour the Illinois state capitol and meet with elected officials.
Students were selected in a competitive process by the Undergraduate Research Steering Committee. Jesse Britz, a chemistry major, studied the use of iron nanoparticles for removing nitrate pollutants with Dr. Keenan Dungey. Nathan Hoyle used geographic information systems to map tree diversity on campus with Environmental Studies professor Dr. Dennis Ruez. Justin Mock investigated supernova with Chemistry professor Dr. John Martin. Annu Daniel, a biology major, reviewed the medical applications of breast milk with Ms. Jaclyn Peterson. Megan Bott described the cultural phenomenon of Asian hipster cuisine with Sociology/Anthropology professor Dr. Shoon Lio. Kristen Zanon measured the antimicrobial properties of wild bergamot with Biology professor Dr. Lucia Vazquez. Matthew Motley, an accounting major, investigated the intersection of politics and tax law with respect to the IRS under the guidance of Mr. Aaron Shures. Sarah Brust studied the emotional labor in the service industry with Business Administration professor Dr. Benjamin Walsh. Keith Wallace designed vision software for autonomous control of a robot with Computer Science instructor Ms. Lucinda Caughey. Visual art major Robert Elmers IV created an original art installation entitled “Peacock’s Tribulation” with Brytton Bjorngaard.
