The AI SIG Research and Development Committee is developing campus-wide recommendations on how to improve the infrastructure, policies, and procedures to advance fundamental and applied Artificial Intelligence research, as well as how to use AI to accelerate current research projects.

As general definitions, basic AI research focuses on advancing the fundamental understanding of artificial intelligence by exploring theoretical concepts, algorithms, and models without immediate concern for practical applications. It seeks to answer questions like how machines can learn, reason, perceive, and act, often pushing the boundaries of what is possible in terms of intelligence and autonomy. Applied AI research, on the other hand, takes these foundational insights and translates them into real-world solutions, developing systems and tools that address specific problems in domains such as healthcare, finance, transportation, public policy, planning, and education.
