A post-professional master’s degree program is designed for credentialed athletic trainers who want additional training beyond their professional degree. Professional programs, also referred to as entry-level programs, are designed for individuals seeking to become athletic trainers.

The MATR program is housed in the School of Health Sciences within the College of Health, Science and Technology.

While UIS does not offer a Master's Degree in Psychology, our Bachelor's program helps prepare students who wish to go on to graduate school. Those who earn their Master's Degree in Psychology may go on to work in areas such as school and I/O psychology, counseling, or testing and measurement.

MPH program only:

If you have completed a similar graduate-level course as part of another degree, you may request a course waiver. Approval requires demonstrating competency to the course instructor of record. A waiver removes the course from your program requirements but does not award academic credit. Students must submit a Student Petition Form along with supporting materials such as syllabi and transcripts. Waiver decisions are made at the discretion of the department representative.

Yes. The MPH program’s 100% online coursework allows you to learn on your schedule. Many of our students successfully balance full-time employment while progressing through the program.

New students who will be using veteran and/or military benefits should send an email to finaid@uis.edu so that the appropriate requirements can be added to your Student Self-Service portal. Please include your UIN and the specific benefit(s) that you have been awarded. A UIS Request for Benefits, available on our financial aid forms page, will be required for each semester that you intend to enroll and use military benefits. The form and additional instructions can be emailed to you upon request.

All courses in the MATR must be taken at UIS.

The primary focus of the MATR program is to deliver a high-quality, clinical-based educational experience for each student that prioritizes instruction of the CAATE Curricular Content Standards and provides variety clinical education experiences. The MATR requires coursework and various research assignments but does not include a traditional thesis.

The Master of Athletic Training Program will use preceptors and clinical sites that incorporate the following CAATE-required clinical education opportunities:

• Individual and team sports
• Sports requiring protective equipment (e.g. helmet and shoulder pads)
• Patients of different sexes
• Non-sport patient populations (e.g. outpatient clinic, emergency room, primary care office, industrial, performing arts, military)
• A variety of conditions other than orthopedics (e.g. primary care, internal medicine, dermatology)
