A group of University of Illinois Springfield students recently traveled to Brazil’s Amazon region for a study away experience that combined environmental science, biology, culture and conservation.

The course, led by Megan Styles, UIS professor of environmental studies, and Amy McEuen, professor of biology, gave students the opportunity to explore one of the world’s most important ecosystems while learning directly from local communities, scientists and university students.

Amy McEuen, professor of biology at the University of Illinois Springfield College of Health, Science and Technology, has published a book offering down-to-earth tips on how everyone can help address global environmental crises ranging from climate change to biodiversity loss.

My journey into public health began with my clinical training as a dentist and medical officer in India. Wanting to move beyond treating individual patients and address health challenges at the population level, I pursued an MPH in Environmental Health and a Certificate in Epidemiology at the University of Illinois Springfield. UIS provided me with a strong foundation in epidemiology, biostatistics, program evaluation, environmental health, and public policy. More importantly, the program connected classroom learning with meaningful, real-world public service opportunities.

Evaluating the role of youth-onset diabetes mellitus in the context of food insecurity and preventive care: a repeated cross-sectional study using propensity score weighted machine learning analysis

Background: Youth-onset diabetes mellitus (DM) is an increasing public health concern, especially among adolescents facing socioeconomic challenges.

I completed my MPH at the University of Illinois Springfield, where I gained strong training in public health practice, environmental health, and applied epidemiology. My time at UIS was both academically and professionally enriching.

While at UIS, I worked as a Graduate Hourly Student Assistant in the Office of Engaged Learning, where I developed communication, teamwork, and organizational skills through supporting student engagement activities and daily office operations.

A collaborative summer research program between the University of Illinois Springfield College of Health, Science and Technology (CHST) and Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) continues to grow, providing hands-on laboratory experience for students pursuing careers in the biological sciences and medicine.

Now in its third year, the program welcomed six LLCC students in June 2026, the largest cohort to date, to conduct faculty-mentored research at UIS.

The University of Illinois Springfield has released the names of the 714 students who made the Dean’s List for the spring semester of 2026.

Kelsey Hall earned her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois Springfield in 2021. She went on to physician assistant school, spending two years preparing for her career in medicine. She has been practicing as a physician assistant in dermatology for three years, helping patients across Illinois. 

A new nationwide study led by a University of Illinois Springfield faculty member finds that people in lower-income communities and communities of color are more likely to live near sites where industries dispose of cancer-causing chemicals. The research was supported by the Intramural Research Program of the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute.
