Choosing a college is a big decision. Choosing what to study is just as important.
You may already know what you want to major in, or you may have a few interests but are not sure which one should focus on. Either way, finding the right academic fit can help you feel more confident about your college choice.
At the University of Illinois Springfield, you have many ways to explore your interests, build your skills and prepare for what comes next.
Start with What Interests You
Think about the subjects you enjoy most in school today. What classes make you want to learn more? What problems do you like to solve? What’s a topic you could talk about for hours? And why do you like these things?
Your answers to these types of questions can help point you toward a major.
UIS offers programs in areas such as business, communication, computer science, education, biology, psychology, politics and international affairs, legal studies, visual arts and many more.
You do not have to have your whole career planned on day one. Discovering your interests is the first step.
Look Beyond the Major
Your major does not have to be your only area of study. You can add a minor, endorsement/licensure, or certificate to create an education that is more personalized to you. [You can select from the drop-down menu labeled “Program Type” to explore minors, endorsement/licensure, or certificate.] You can also choose pre-professional paths to prepare for graduate or professional school.
For example, students interested in health careers can explore pre-health options as they prepare for post college programs in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy and other fields.
How will this major lead to a career?
As you explore majors, ask an important question: What can I do with this degree?
Don’t rule out certain majors just because you don’t see a clear career path. Use UIS’s Career Pathfinder to explore careers related to your major. You can learn about career titles, salaries, skills, employers and other ways to use your degree. You can also browse job sites to see what jobs interest you. What types of education do these jobs require?
This can help you connect what you learn in the classroom to your goals after graduation.
UIS graduates go on to work in many fields. The latest UIS career outcomes report found that 90.1% of undergraduate graduates from the Class of 2024 were working, continuing their education or serving in the military 12 months after graduation.
Get Experience Before You Graduate
The best way to decide if a major is right for you is to get involved.
At UIS, you can explore your interests further through internships, research, hands-on projects, campus jobs and other experiences. You can also work with the Career Development Center for help with resumes, interviews, job searches and career planning.
These experiences can help you learn what you enjoy, build your resume and make connections in your field.
Not Sure What to Study? That’s OK.
UIS offers an Undergraduate Undecided program for students who want time to explore different subjects before choosing a major. You can complete courses while learning more about your interests and strengths, with support from academic advisors.
Being undecided does not mean you are behind. Most specialized coursework doesn’t start until the end of sophomore year.
Find a Program that Fits Your Future
The right major is not just about what sounds interesting today. It is also the gateway to building the career and life you want in the future.
Lastly, don’t forget to talk to friends, family, faculty, admissions counselors and current students about what you hope to get from college and what your plans are for the future. They should be able to help you connect the dots.
Most of all, remember your interests may grow and change as you learn more about yourself.
