Memories of State Government: Springfield’s Doc Helm and his Photo Collection 1941 – 1992

The Sangamon Experience at the University of Illinois Springfield and the UIS Diversity Center will host a presentation entitled "Memories of State Government: Springfield’s Doc Helm and his Photo Collection 1941 – 1992" by Illinois State Archives Director Dr. David Joens and Archival Program Administrator Cathy Popovitch.

Sangamon Experience and the Diversity Center at the University of Illinois Springfield will host two Black History Month events that are free and open to the public.

Sangamon Experience at the University of Illinois Springfield presents a new exhibit, “Susan Lawrence Dana: A Woman of Progress,” opening Aug. 1, 2022, on the lower level of the Public Affairs Center at UIS. The exhibit was created by recent UIS public history graduate Katie Brethorst-Stockwell.

WHAT: Sangamon Experience at the University of Illinois Springfield will premiere the original documentary, “Sangamo Country: 200 Years of Sangamon County.” The film features local researchers and citizens discussing the history of the county and sharing stories that have often been long forgotten.

The documentary is a production of Sangamon Experience and the Sangamon County Bicentennial Commission, cooperating with the Sangamon County Historical Society.

Parking

All visitors must park in visitor-designated lots and pay the visitor parking rate of $1 per hour using the nearest parking pay station. Pay stations accept coins and credit/debit cards only – NO bills! You must know your license plate number when using the pay stations. 

The Sangamon Experience at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) will present five live-streamed historical discussions at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays in March.

The series of live-streamed discussions is part of their “Women’s History Month: Community Trailblazers” series.

We are told the series plans to highlight women who have impacted their community here in central Illinois throughout the month.
