The Illinois Springfield softball team split a pair of games Thursday at Scheels Sports Park, opening the UIS Softball Capital City McDonald's Classic with a 4-2 win over Davenport before falling 10-5 to Ohio Dominican.
Ill.-Springfield (8-4) used a four-run third inning to secure the win in the opener, highlighted by three doubles. The Prairie Stars later rallied for three runs in the fifth inning against Ohio Dominican but could not overcome an early deficit.

The Illinois Springfield baseball team has climbed into the national rankings, checking in at No. 19 in the Week Two poll released Wednesday evening by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
UIS (5-2) is one of 25 programs recognized in this week's rankings and is the only Great Lakes Valley Conference team listed in the national poll.

UIS Softball will host the Capital City McDonald's Classic this week at the Springfield Clinic Dome at Scheels Sports Park. The three-team event runs Thursday and Friday and features Ohio Dominican and Davenport.

The UIS Prairie Stars baseball series against the UMSL Tritons has been adjusted for this weekend with a flip of game days.
The series will still be played as split-site doubleheaders, but the home and away dates have changed.
UIS will now open the series on Friday, Feb. 20, with a doubleheader at UMSL in St. Louis. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., with game two to follow.
Senior Madelyn Miller-Ross of Illinois Springfield has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference/Athletic Solutions Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for the third time this season, the league office announced Wednesday.
At the GVSU Big Meet on Feb. 13–14, Miller-Ross ran a 9:35 in the 3,000 meters, setting a new UIS school record. Then, on Saturday, she posted a time of 2:21 in the 800 meters, the top UIS performance in the event at the meet. She currently ranks No. 1 in the GLVC and No. 16 in NCAA Division II in the 3K.
