Summer 2023

Know Your U

We are excited to announce a Summer 2023 Know Your U event for UIS! Staff are invited to visit the UIS Community Garden on Tuesday, August 1st, 2023, from 3:00-4:30pm. The Community Garden serves as an outdoor classroom where community members, students, faculty, and staff cultivate fresh produce, build relationships with each other, and work to make the food system more sustainable. The garden is located next to the Shepherd House on the corner of Shepherd Road and University Drive, just south of the soccer/cricket fields. This event is an opportunity for UIS employees to receive hands-on gardening experience on campus. Attendees will be provided bags to fill with fresh produce to take home!

Please visit the HR website for more details on attending a Know Your U event including information on eligibility and time usage.

Probationary Evaluations

Civil Service

Probationary Evaluations

Human Resources would like to remind supervisors about the requirements to complete Civil Service employee probationary evaluations. All Civil Service positions require two evaluations during the probationary period - midway and at the completion of the period. These evaluations are an opportunity to provide important feedback to the employee as they adjust to their new position. These evaluations must be submitted to HR for processing in a timely manner. You can expect reminder emails approximately 2 weeks prior to each due date. The evaluation form will be included in the email, however, it is also available online here. Signed evaluations may be sent by campus mail to HRB-30 or by email to Kenzie Westlake at mwest22@uis.edu.

July Session

Supervisor Development Series

Everything I-9, the next session in our Supervisor Development Series, is just around the corner. Employees will come away from this session with a better understanding of the guidelines set forth by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and proper use of Tracker I-9. Although I-9s are typically done by HR and a select few departments, we would like to expand this capacity to better meet the demands during high-volume hiring periods. If you play a role in the onboarding of new employees in your department, we encourage you to attend this session and gain an enhanced understanding of the importance I-9’s play in the hiring process. If you are a Dean/Director/Department Head, we ask that you please encourage supervisory staff and Business Managers in your unit(s) to attend. Questions may be directed to uishr@uis.edu.

This 1-hour interactive session will be held on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, from 9-10 am via Zoom.

Rising Stars

Announcement

Rising Stars

Registration for the next Rising Stars program will begin soon! Rising Stars is an extended orientation program designed for new Academic Professional and Civil Service employees to help familiarize themselves to campus and the many acronyms, places, and faces they’ll see while employed at UIS.

Beginning in August, all eligible employees who were hired during the prior 12-month period will be invited to participate. Rising Stars will meet on the third Tuesday of each month between September and April from 9-11am.

Be on the lookout for more information on how to register for Rising Stars this month!

2023 AEO Search Manual

Now Available

2023 AEO Search Manual

Over the past year, the Access & Equity Office (AEO) has worked to review existing hiring processes, gathered feedback and suggestions from the campus community, and identified new and emerging practices for inclusive employee recruitment and hiring. This work has informed the creation of a new AEO Search Manual, which provides guidance to campus community members on how to conduct a search to fill an AP or full-time Faculty position in a manner that keeps UIS’s institutional commitment to equal opportunity and inclusion at the core of the process.

We encourage everyone to review and begin using the updated AEO Search Manual moving forward.

Friendly Reminder

Employee of the Month Nominations

Do you have a colleague you feel deserves recognition for their hard work and dedication to UIS? Be sure to nominate them for Employee of the Month (EOM). The EOM award is an opportunity to acknowledge employees who have served in an exceptional manner in our campus community and allows us to show our appreciation for their outstanding performance. All EOM colleagues also have an opportunity to be chosen as the Employee of the Year!

To nominate an employee, submit the EOM Nomination Form to the committee for consideration. You can find eligibility requirements and the submission form here.
