  • American Indians face a unique set of challenges in gaining access to a college education and are one of the most underrepresented groups both in college and in the degree-holding population. With extreme poverty and limited access to educational resources remaining persistent problems on reservations and educated professionals also in short supply in many communities, education is a pressing concern for the American Indian community.

New Social Acceptance and Positive Activism Stimulates Awards

A growing number of scholarships are devoted exclusively to students who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. Some scholarships are available nationally, and other scholarships are exclusively devoted to students from specific geographic regions. These populations have become much more visible within higher education, but still face formidable social challenges.
