The UIS baseball team opened Saturday's doubleheader with a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over Lewis, but the Flyers responded in the second game, holding off a late UIS rally for an 8-6 win. The teams will meet again Sunday at noon to decide the series.
GAME ONE | W, 4-3
Lewis took the early lead, striking in the first inning on an RBI double. The Flyers added another run in the third on a wild pitch, putting UIS in a 2-0 hole.
The Prairie Stars got on the board in the fourth thanks to Noah Caceres, who launched a solo home run to right field to cut the deficit in half.
Lewis tacked on another run in the sixth, capitalizing on an error to extend its lead to 3-1.
In the seventh, Ty Hollandsworth singled before Ivan Dahlberg crushed a two-run homer to right to tie the game at 3-3 and force extras.
Kannon Walker took over on the mound and made quick work of Lewis in the eighth, retiring the Flyers in order.
In the bottom half, Ethan Bowers led off with a single, and after UIS loaded the bases, Michael Paule delivered the decisive blow, lining an RBI single to left to give the Prairie Stars a 4-3 walk-off victory.
GAME TWO | L, 8-6
In what started as a pitcher's duel, Lewis struck first with a solo home run in the third, then added a two-run fourth and a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to build a 5-0 lead.
UIS finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth when Mack Clark singled home Drew Ezard to put the Prairie Stars on the board.
The Flyers put up another two-run inning in the sixth for a 7-1 lead.
UIS refused to go quietly, erupting for five runs in the seventh. Nate Bingman sparked the surge with an RBI double before Clark scored on a balk, and Dahlberg stayed hot with a two-run single to bring the Prairie Stars within two.
Lewis managed to escape the bases-loaded jam, sealing the win.
Mark Decicco (0-2) took the loss, while Brayden Mayer and Jack Winterbauer worked in relief.
