Rethinking In-Class Learning
What kinds of learning activities might benefit from the shared time and space of the classroom?
This CSIL panel explores the idea that if a skill or practice really matters for student learning—writing, problem-solving, discussion, analysis—it may belong in class rather than being left for students to do on their own. Panelists will reflect on the opportunities and trade-offs of devoting more class time to guided practice and active learning across different disciplines and teaching contexts. Professors David Johnson (SIU), Lynn Fisher (UIS), and Neeraj Rajasekar (UIS) will share their perspectives and experiences. How might rethinking the balance between in-class and out-of-class work change the way we design courses—and what might students gain from that shift?
