The Sangamon Experience at the University of Illinois Springfield invites you to attend the grand opening of its new exhibit, Soil & Soul: Farming in the Sangamon River valley, which includes a documentary film that tells the stories of 10 individuals who have spent their lives farming throughout the Sangamon River valley, an area that encompasses approximately 1,500 square in central Illinois.

Soil & Soul is presented by United Community Bank, with additional funding from the Melvin Wing Charitable Trust and the Dan and Carolyn Dungan Family Fund.

Please join us for the next installment of the monthly Employee Development Series: Soft Skills, A Panel Discussion. It’s not only technical expertise that makes an employee great, but the personal attributes that also allow for effective interaction are equally important. Communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management are all examples of soft skills that are hard to measure but have a significant impact in the workplace.

The UIS Police Department provides training presentations on ways to minimize your risk during an active shooter / active threat incident. The next class will be on Wednesday, October 23, at 10:00 am in Brookens Auditorium. The presentation will be approximately 1 hour in length.

Supporting Mental Health on Campus

Join Dr. Bethany Bilyeu, Executive Director of Student Support Services, for an informative session on how to support mental health on campus. Mental health issues are on the rise and this training session will provide you with the basic skills to respond to a person in need. This session will also cover the process of addressing and supporting student mental health.

Engaging Your Online Students: Practical Strategies for Success

Join us for an insightful workshop focused on effective strategies for engaging online students. Dr. Serkan Karadas, recipient of the 2024 Burks Oakley II Distinguished Online Teaching Award, will share practical approaches he uses to foster interaction, participation, and engagement in his finance and economics courses. From utilizing videos and surveys to incorporating experiential learning opportunities, Dr. Karadas will provide actionable techniques you can implement in your own online teaching.

The Cox Children’s Center and the Volunteer and Civic Engagement Center are once again hosting Trunk or Treat for Canned Goods. Please sign up to participate in this year’s event which is being held on Friday, October 25, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Set up will begin as early as 8 a.m.

The Office of Strategic Communications will be hosting two Open Photo Studio sessions for Fall 2024 for all staff or faculty. The photos can be used for university purposes such as department websites, campus directory, speaking engagements at conferences, etc. Any staff or faculty member who either hasn’t had their portrait taken or would like another, more recent, portrait taken is encouraged to attend.
