The University of Illinois Springfield web team has launched updates to the main website header and Quick Links navigation to improve accessibility, usability and overall site performance.
These enhancements are part of UIS’s ongoing commitment to creating a more accessible and user-friendly digital experience for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
Quick Links Now Available as Stand-Alone Pages
One of the most noticeable changes is the redesign of the Quick Links section. Previously located within a flyout menu on every page of the website, Quick Links are now available as stand-alone pages that are prominently linked at the top of the site.
This update provides several key benefits:
- Improved accessibility: Stand-alone pages are easier to navigate using assistive technologies.
- Cleaner navigation experience: Moving away from a flyout menu simplifies the header and improves consistency across devices.
- Reduced risk of widespread link errors: In the previous structure, a broken link within the flyout menu could appear as a broken link on every page of the website. By separating Quick Links into individual pages, potential link issues are contained and easier to manage.
This approach enhances reliability while maintaining convenient access to frequently used resources.
Menu Placement Improved for Legibility
In addition to updating Quick Links, the primary site menu has been moved out of the header image and repositioned above it.
This adjustment improves:
- Legibility: Text is now displayed against a clean, consistent background rather than layered over imagery.
- Accessibility compliance: Clear contrast and predictable placement support users with visual impairments and those using assistive technology.
- User experience across devices: The new layout provides a more intuitive and consistent navigation experience on desktop and mobile screens.
Commitment to Continuous Improvement
These updates reflect UIS’s commitment to maintaining a modern, accessible and inclusive website that serves the entire campus community.
As digital accessibility standards continue to evolve, UIS will continue evaluating and improving the website to ensure it remains welcoming and usable for all users.
