The University of Illinois Springfield Department of Campus Recreation will host a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, at the Crowne Plaza Springfield, located at 3000 S. Dirksen Pkwy., to mark the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C.

Springfield firefighters and other local first responders will be taking part in the stair climb, along with community members. Participants will have the opportunity to climb 110 flights of stairs (or any lesser amount they choose) to honor those who climbed 110 flights of stairs attempting to rescue victims in the World Trade Center.

Registration for the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is now open at go.uis.edu/911StairClimb. The deadline to register is Sept. 1. The registration fee for the event is $25, which includes a t-shirt, Mission BBQ lunch and a raffle ticket. The raffle will feature Knights Action Park tickets and other great prizes.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that builds mortgage-free smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans and first responders.

Sponsors for the event include Prairie State Bank and Trust, Johnson and Johnson Auto Service, Willow and Birch Salon, BUNN, Boy Scouts of America, American Legion Post 32 and Bill Stokes Timing.
