UIS Competes in First Synchronous Virtual Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, IL (October 18, 2020) – The UIS Speech and Debate Team participated in the first synchronous, virtual tournament of the season. The Cyber Falcon classic was hosted by Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio and featured competitors from more than 40 teams around the nation. All collegiate speech and debate competitions are taking place online this year due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic.

Senior Sarah Burris represented UIS at this competition. She entered the events of poetry interpretation, where she placed 6th, and media broadcasting. Burris stated that “It was a privilege to return to Bowling Green University. It was the first tournament I competed at as a novice and it became a good measure of how much I have grown within this team. The competition was phenomenal and I am proud to have competed alongside them.”

The University of Illinois Springfield Speech and Debate Team is committed to training the next generation of civic leaders, public speakers, and communicators who are passionate about effecting change in their communities. Students who are interested in joining the team should reach out to the coach Timothy Bill (tbill2@uis.edu) or check out the team website at Speech and Debate site.
