WHAT: The University of Illinois Springfield Center for State Policy and Leadership (CSPL), the University of Illinois System Institute of Government and Public Affairs (IGPA) and the Illinois Innovation Network (IIN) will present two days of presentations, discussion and networking around policy and social innovation. Breakfast, lunch and refreshments will be provided. Registration is required.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 and Wednesday, April 24

WHERE: UIS and downtown Springfield

DETAILS: The policy summit will have sessions, a panel discussion and breakout sessions across five tracks. It will also have a workshop to explore, think about, problem-solve and innovate on policy and social issues. Topics for the tracks are education, learning and family well-being; equity, justice and human flourishing; fiscal and economic policy; substance abuse and mental health; and social innovation presented by the Center for Urban and Rural Environmental Sustainability (CURES).

Tuesday, April 23

  • Registration and breakfast will take place from 8-9 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
  • A welcome address will be given by Molly Lamb, executive director of the Center for State Policy and Leadership, and by David Merriman, interim director of the Institute of Government and Public Affairs, at 9 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom
  • Following the welcome address session, a panel discussion titled “Big Problems, Big Ideas: Why Policy?” will take place in the Student Union Ballroom at 9:15 a.m. The panel is moderated by Sean Crawford of NPR Illinois. Panelists include Sen. Doris Turner and Rep. Mike Coffey. Other panelists include Beverly Bunch, a UIS professor, and Ryan Croke, Illinois' first assistant deputy governor.
  • A breakout session for each of the five tracks will take place at 10:30 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom or in the Public Affairs Center.
  • At noon, remarks will be given by UIS Chancellor Janet Gooch in the Student Union Ballroom. Following the remarks, a keynote speech will be delivered by Heidi Mueller, director of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
  • Breakout sessions will take place at 1:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. for all five tracks in the Student Union and the Public Affairs Center.
  • The Samuel K. Gove Illinois Legislative Internship Hall of Fame reception will be held in downtown Springfield from 6-8 p.m.

Wednesday, April 24

  • Registration and breakfast will take place from 8-9 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
  • A welcome address will be given by Molly Lamb, executive director of the UIS Center for State Policy and Leadership, and by UIS Chancellor Janet Gooch at 9 a.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
  • A keynote address will be delivered by Ben Lough, a dean, director and professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the Student Union Ballroom.
  • A morning session on design thinking to address social innovation will take place at 10:15 a.m in the Student Union Ballroom.  
  • A lunch address titled “How Federal Government is Using Human-Centered Design to Transform the American Experience” will begin at noon in the Student Union Ballroom.
  • An afternoon session on design thinking to address social innovation will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
  • A wrap-up reflection session will take place from 3:30 to 4 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
  • The Social Innovation Committee will be available for consultation sessions from 4-5 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom.
