WHAT: The University of Illinois Springfield will hold three Lunch & Learn Series events this spring. The series is presented by the UIS Alumni SAGE Society and the Illinois State Historical Society.

WHEN: Noon-1 p.m. on March 10, April 6 and May 3

WHERE: The March 10 program will be a virtual-only format via Zoom Webinar. The April 6 and May 3 programs will be hybrid with in-person and virtual participation options.

DETAILS: Thursday, March 10 - Histories of Place: Nauvoo and Alton

Kim Logan is a sixth-generation resident, historian and community leader, who will present on the rich history and fascinating evolution of Nauvoo, Illinois. Terri Porter Cameron is a retired director of educational technology and curriculum, historian and native of Alton, Illinois, who will present on the city's magnificent and impactful history.

Wednesday, April 6 - The Future of Journalism
Location: Illini Country Club, 1601 Illini Rd., Springfield, with a hybrid Zoom Webinar option available

Fletcher "Bud" Farrar, Jr., publisher and editor of Illinois Times, will present on the rise of alternative journalism and issues related to freedom of the press. Jason Piscia, director of the UIS Public Affairs Reporting program, and will discuss mainstream journalism in Illinois and how university programs are adapting their training of future journalists.

Tuesday, May 3 - The African-American Experience in Illinois: Slavery vs. Service
Location: Illini Country Club, 1601 Illini Rd., Springfield, with a hybrid Zoom Webinar option available

Candice Trees is a public servant and volunteer leader of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., who will present on the history of service of Black fraternal organizations to the region and University. Tara McAndrew is an award-winning writer whose work has appeared in broadcast, print and theatre and will present on the origins and history of slavery in Illinois.

The in-person events at the Illini Country Club cost $32 a person and include lunch. The virtual Zoom webinars are free. All in-person attendees must provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result completed within two days of the event; all attendees must agree to wear face-coverings indoors, when not eating or drinking; and all attendees must sign-in at their tables to provide seating details in the event contact tracing is necessary.

Each virtual program needs to be registered for individually. In-person tickets can be added to an online cart and processed together when you register online.
