The University of Illinois has been granted Observer Organization status with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This designation allows the UIS community to nominate representatives to attend the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31), scheduled for November 9–20, 2026, in Antalya, Turkey.

Faculty, staff and students interested in being considered for nomination are encouraged to complete the nomination form and submit it through Box by 11:59 p.m. CST on August 6. Now that the infrastructure is in place, announcements of related future opportunities will be made with more lead time, to the extent possible.

Please note the following important information:

• Submitting a nomination does not guarantee attendance. The UNFCCC will determine participation quotas after the nomination period closes.
• The University does not provide funding for travel or conference-related expenses. Nominees are responsible for securing their own funding, confirming eligibility with their business office and arranging travel, visas and insurance.
• Nominees must comply with all applicable campus research security, international travel and UNFCCC code of conduct requirements.
