The Springfield Fire Department will be conducting a series of planned fire-service training burns at the Sunflower Court apartment buildings on Oct. 14, 21, and 28, beginning at approximately 7:30 a.m.

The training exercise will provide the Springfield Fire Department with an opportunity to conduct training using the structures before they are burned down and removed. The Sunflower Court site will subsequently be used for new buildings supporting the new Bachelor of Applied Science in Engineering Technology program.

The campus community and surrounding area may see an increased presence of fire and other emergency-response personnel and vehicles during the training exercise. Depending on conditions, individuals may also notice:

  • Smoke and fire associated with the training exercise;
  • Emergency vehicles and personnel;
  • Noise and other activity associated with fire-service training; and
  • Temporary changes to traffic, parking, pedestrian movement, or access in the area.

Health and safety considerations

Individuals with respiratory conditions, sensitivities, or other concerns about smoke exposure should consider avoiding the area during the training exercise.

Members of the campus community should follow any posted access restrictions and instructions from emergency personnel and campus officials in the area.

Additional information

Additional information about the training exercise, including any changes to access or campus operations, will be provided as details are confirmed. Questions regarding the training exercise may be directed to UIS Facilities and Services at facilities@uis.edu.
