The University of Illinois Springfield held a groundbreaking ceremony on Sept. 19 for its new Library Commons, a $42.5 million, three-story, 52,000-square-foot facility designed to transform the student experience.

Funded through an investment by the State of Illinois, the Library Commons will be constructed between the Student Union and the Health Sciences Building on the UIS quad. The building is designed as a one-stop hub for student support, combining the library, the Center for Academic Success and Advising, the Career Development Center and Information Technology Services under one roof.

“This project marks a bold step forward in reimagining how our campus spaces can support student learning, engagement and success. The Library Commons will be much more than a place to check out books,” said Chancellor Janet L. Gooch.

The facility will offer a range of flexible spaces to support different learning styles and needs. Plans include group and individual study areas, computer stations, open seating that encourages collaboration and a large classroom that seats more than 100 students. Gooch noted that students will be able to move seamlessly between services and resources, accessing advising, career counseling and tutoring without ever leaving the building.

“This is more than a physical expansion—it’s an investment in our students’ success,” Gooch said. “By bringing together key resources in one convenient, student-centered space, we are creating a more connected, supportive and innovative learning environment.”

UIS Student Government Association President Jazel Ware-Grant told the audience the Library Commons will directly benefit students.

“It is an honor to stand here today on behalf of the student body as we celebrate the groundbreaking of this new building. When it comes to creating a space for students, it should represent more than just another place to go and study. This can represent opportunity, support and connection,” Ware-Grant said.

The Library Commons will also embody the university’s commitment to sustainability. Designed for energy efficiency, the building will be constructed to meet LEED Gold certification standards. UIS leaders said the facility will not only provide essential services but also model environmentally responsible development.

The Library Commons is scheduled to open in fall 2027.
