Greetings! Here are some important updates and announcements from the UIS Office of Human Resources:

New Employees in HR and AEO

UIS Office of Human Resources is pleased to welcome Heather Kimbler as one of the new additions to our staff. Heather started with us on Feb. 20. She will serve as the Leave of Absence Coordinator at UIS, which includes but is not limited to handling Family Medical Leave, Parental Leave, Military Leave and Funeral/Bereavement Leave matters. In addition to her responsibilities with Leaves of Absence, she will also be assisting with matters pertaining to labor and employee relations. Heather comes to us with prior work experience in various positions at state agencies where she was assisting with the processing of leaves of absence as well as labor and employee relations issues. We are excited to have Heather on board!

Jeff Moulton is joining the Access & Equity Office as the Inclusive Workforce Specialist. Jeff also joined our team on Feb. 20. In this role, Jeff will be taking on some of the day-to-day tasks related to equal employment opportunity, Affirmative Action employment processes, and ADA Accommodations. Jeff will be the campus community’s go-to person for questions about the search manual, search and interview approvals, workplace accommodations, inclusive hiring guidelines, and related training requests. Jeff comes to UIS with substantial experience in state government and at the Illinois Department of Human Rights, and he is looking forward to getting to know our campus community!

HR is excited to announce a total reorganization of our website. Many thanks to Web Services for working with us to design a more user-friendly site that organizes content by audience. We now have specific resources organized for career seekers, employees, supervisors, retirees, and student employment. While we continue to update and improve the content, please check it out and let us know if you have any suggestions.

Hiring Student Employees

The next session of our ongoing Supervisor Development Series, Hiring a Student Employee, will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. March 29 via Zoom. Please join our panel of experts from within UIS to learn about the different types of Student Employees UIS has as well as the proper procedures and best practices for hiring them. This session is open to supervisors, business managers, and any other individuals involved in the process of hiring students. There will be a small portion of time set aside for questions, but feel free to send your questions in advance to StudentEmployment@uis.edu and we will be sure to address them in the session. A flyer for the event can be found here and along with the Zoom link

Preferred Qualifications for Civil Service Vacancies

The minimum qualifications for a Civil Service classification are set by the State University Civil Service System. Human Resources is required to screen all applicants to ensure they have the minimum qualifications for a position. Preferred qualifications are determined by the hiring unit. Human Resources does not check for preferred qualifications and is not allowed to eliminate an applicant from consideration based on a preferred qualification. It is the hiring unit’s responsibility to explore whether an applicant has the preferred qualification(s) during the interview process. If you have any questions about position qualifications, please contact your Division Liaison.

Employee Assistance Program

The Employee Assistance Program can be a valuable resource during difficult times. The EAP is available to employees who are eligible for the State Employee Group Insurance Program. If the employee participates in a State health plan, EAP services are also available to their eligible dependents. The EAP is a free, voluntary and confidential program that provides problem identification, counseling and referral services. Employees will be directed to a Guidance Consultant to assist them with a variety of concerns. All calls and counseling sessions are confidential, except as required by law.
