How did you get started in your career field?
In my past life, I worked as a school librarian for ages K through 12. It was there that I learned I had a passion for advising and teaching, which has led me to my current role at UIS as a career advisor.
It is such a great fit for me. I enjoy walking along the journey of students and alumni as they make plans, dream, explore and ponder pathways to careers. This is what it is all about for me.
Do you have any side projects or personal goals you are working on?
Yes, I have three goals for 2025:
- Successfully plant okra in the home garden.
- Improve my swimming strokes.
- Visit more regional state parks and National Parks for hiking adventures.
What's the best piece of advice you have ever received?
The best piece of advice I have ever received was to find mentors in any field of work you are in. They are invaluable to you, and you are a benefit to them. I say this to everyone.
What's a TV show you have recently watched?
The Secret Lives of Animals was very well done. The camerawork and the production of the stories was fantastic. I've made my family watch this beautiful series more than a few times.
What did you like to do growing up?
I loved scavenger hunts as a kid. Solving clues and finding little “treasures” always made me happy. One year, I even created a Christmas scavenger hunt in the yard, so my family had to search for their gifts.
