Dear Campus Community,

We’re expecting very hot conditions in our area today through Friday, with a Prolonged Heat Advisory in effect. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the 90° to around 100°F, with heat index values between 100–105°F.

We want everyone in our campus community to stay safe, comfortable, and healthy during the heat. Please take a few extra precautions over the next several days:

• Stay hydrated: Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
• Take breaks from the heat: Limit time outdoors and avoid strenuous activity or direct sunlight, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Protect yourself from the sun: Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and wear a wide-brimmed hat when spending time outside.
• Stay cool: Take advantage of air-conditioned buildings and spaces whenever possible.
• Look out for one another: Check in on friends, classmates, coworkers, and anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
• Never leave people or pets in a parked vehicle: Temperatures inside vehicles can become dangerously hot in just minutes.

Know the Signs of Heat Illness

• Heat Exhaustion: Symptoms can include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and a fast pulse. If you or someone around you experiences these symptoms, move to a cool place, sip water, and loosen or remove unnecessary clothing.
• Heat Stroke: Medical Emergency: Watch for confusion, hot skin that may be dry or sweaty, a rapid pulse, or loss of consciousness. 

Please listen to your body and don’t try to “push through” the heat. If you start feeling unwell, stop what you’re doing, get somewhere cool, hydrate, and ask for help.

Stay safe, stay hydrated, and stay cool! We appreciate everyone doing their part to take care of themselves and our campus community during this stretch of extreme heat.
