Back to St. Louis for UIS Speech and Debate

SPRINGFIELD, IL. (December 10, 2019) – The UIS Speech and Debate Team returned to Webster University to compete in the 2019 Gateway Swing Tournament. This competition provides competitors with the opportunity to compete in eleven different speech events and parliamentary debate.

Senior Sarah Burris represented UIS at this competition. She spoke in four different event: after dinner speaking, impromptu speaking, poetry interpretation, and program oral interpretation.

Coach Timothy Bill noted “Sarah got in a lot of quality speaking time this weekend. It was great to get feedback from the judges that we can use to keep improving into the spring semester. The team’s next tournament is in Urbana, IL in January.

The University of Illinois Springfield Speech and Debate Team is committed to training the next generation of civic leaders, public speakers, and communicators who are passionate about effecting change in their communities.
