As part of UIS Athletics' 15 Years of NCAA Division II Membership celebration, the department is highlighting 15 standout teams and 15 standout student-athletes who have shaped the Prairie Stars' Division II era. Each week, UIS features one team and one student-athlete, honoring the accomplishments, championship moments, and legacy-building performances that have defined Prairie Stars Athletics.
This week, UIS recognizes Danielle Dennis as one of the 15 standout student-athletes who helped define the Prairie Stars' Division II era. A prolific hitter and elite defender from Sherman, Ill., and a graduate of Williamsville High School, Dennis built one of the most complete careers in program history during her four seasons with the Prairie Stars from 2020 through 2023.
Dennis helped power the Prairie Stars back to the NCAA Tournament in 2023, contributing to a 33-22 campaign that marked the program's first NCAA postseason appearance since 2019.
She finished her career as one of the most productive hitters in program history, holding multiple Prairie Stars offensive records. When her collegiate career concluded, Dennis stood atop the record book in total bases (292), on-base percentage (.448), and doubles (51), while also owning career marks in hits (186) and runs scored (118). She additionally ranked second in walks (70) and third in RBI (111), and remained among the program's top-10 performers in home runs, at bats, games started, and assists.
Dennis' consistency at the plate defined her time in the lineup. Her 2021 season stands as one of the greatest single-season performances in program history, setting the program record with a .411 batting average and pairing it with a program-best .643 slugging percentage. That year, she also produced 53 hits and 15 doubles.
Her 2023 campaign ranked among the program's single-season bests as well, highlighted by 62 hits that stand as one of the top five totals in Prairie Stars history. The 2022 season was similarly impactful, featuring 44 runs scored — also among the program's top single-season marks — along with a .381 batting average and a .626 slugging percentage.
Power and patience were consistent themes throughout Dennis' career. She ranked among the national leaders in sacrifice flies in 2022 and finished top-100 nationally in doubles and on-base percentage that same season. She recorded three consecutive seasons ranking in the program's top-10 for doubles, including 16 in 2023 and 15 in both 2021 and 2022.
One of Dennis' most memorable single-game performances came in 2022 when she launched two home runs in a contest against Upper Iowa, showcasing the combination of power and contact ability that made her a difficult matchup for opposing pitchers.
Dennis was also a decorated conference and region performer. She earned First Team All-GLVC honors in 2021 and again in 2023, with a Second Team selection in 2022. In postseason recognition, she was named First Team All-Region by both D2CCA and the NFCA in 2021, followed by second team honors from both organizations in 2022. She added another D2CCA Second Team All-Region selection in 2023.
Beyond the record book, Dennis was a model of academic excellence and leadership. She earned the GLVC Brother James Gaffney Distinguished Scholar Award four times, was a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection in both 2021 and 2022, and concluded her collegiate career with a perfect 4.0 GPA while earning a Master of Public Health degree. She also received the Council of Presidents' Academic Excellence Award and was nominated for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award in 2023.
While several of Dennis' records have been surpassed in recent seasons, her career helped lay the foundation for the program's continued offensive growth. As a trailblazer for the Prairie Stars, she helped elevate the standard for future generations of UIS softball student-athletes.
Dennis' career embodied the balance of athletic achievement, academic commitment, and leadership that defines Prairie Stars student-athletes.
