Tell us about your personal and professional journey.

As a first-generation college student, education was never something I took for granted. There wasn’t a blueprint laid out for me — every step required intention, resilience, and belief that I could build something beyond what I had seen growing up. That experience shaped how I approach both life and business: with gratitude, discipline, and a deep sense of responsibility.

Earning my MBA from the University of Illinois Springfield was a turning point in my journey. Completing that degree gave me more than academic knowledge — it gave me confidence. It affirmed that I belonged in rooms where decisions are made and that I had the capacity to lead, not just participate. That confidence is ultimately what led me to take one of the biggest risks of my life: purchasing my own business.

When I acquired my firm, I wasn’t just buying a book of clients — I was committing to stewardship, growth, and community impact. As a first-generation college graduate, the opportunity to own and lead a professional services firm felt both humbling and empowering. It reinforced the belief that access, education, and mentorship can transform trajectories.

Professionally, my work today is driven by more than numbers. I help contractors, business owners, and families make informed financial decisions because I understand how transformative financial clarity can be. I’ve seen firsthand how structure, strategy, and education change outcomes — not just for businesses, but for families and communities.

Personally, the journey has taught me resilience, ownership, and service. I don’t view my work as simply preparing tax returns or analyzing financial statements. I see it as equipping others with tools and confidence — the same kind of confidence I gained when I realized I was capable of more than I once imagined.

My journey has been shaped by being the first in my family to navigate higher education, by earning my MBA and stepping into leadership, and by choosing to take risks rooted in growth. Those experiences continue to guide how I lead, how I serve, and how I invest in the community around me.

Who or what has played a significant role in influencing or mentoring you?

Dr. Karadas at the University of Illinois Springfield played a significant role in shaping both my professional direction and my confidence as a leader. His passion for teaching and finance made complex concepts practical and relevant, and he consistently challenged me to think beyond formulas and consider long-term strategy and impact.

More than anything, his mentorship helped shape how I approach decision-making. He encouraged disciplined thinking, thoughtful risk assessment, and intentional growth — lessons that directly influenced my decision to purchase and lead my own firm. His belief in his students’ potential had a lasting impact on me.

I continue to think highly of his advice and example, and I am deeply grateful for the role he played in helping shape my future.

What goals, projects, or aspirations are you excited about for the future?

I'm working on the Mikelson Family Endowment and that's something I'm really excited about. I want to ensure that the next generation of students have access to financial aid and scholarships so that finances aren't a barrier to entry for their education.

What advice would you share with other emerging professionals who want to make an impact in their field or community?

Be active in the community in whatever way you can. Volunteer, donate your time, listen to the needs of those in the community, and never stop being yourself!

Outside of work, what activities, interests, or passions keep you inspired and grounded?

Playing saxophone, painting with my wife, and swimming are all hobbies that I use to clear my mind and keep me grounded.

Is there anything else you’d like us to know as we celebrate you as a Promising Prairie Star?

I love UIS for the people, the mentorship, the campus, and the faculty's devotion to all student's success.
