What was your overall UIS experience like?

I have an overall 10/10 experience at UIS. If UIS had an LLM/JD program I think that I'll still be enrolled there today. I loved the curriculum and the unique approach to studying and learning. I kick myself for not being involved in any clubs or activities. However, there's still time because I would love a second Masters!

Do you have any fond memories of your time at UIS you'd like to share?

I made a friend while at UIS and every Saturday morning we would go to the student union and study. we would take turns bringing donuts and other snacks, and it was really nice to have a study buddy every week.

Why did you choose UIS?

I don't have a clear answer for this question. On one hand, UIS was local and a good school, but that doesn't do the university justice. I think I choose UIS because I felt like my future and my education mattered to everyone there. The campus is so beautiful and vibrant, the culture is so welcoming, and the curriculum was challenging and fun.

What has your career path been like? How did you end up where you are?

I started my career in public accounting at Sikich. During my time there, I worked on both Not-for-profit audits and tax. I then transitioned to working on the Syndication Team for an Impact Investing firm in STL. There I gained skills in underwriting, tax compliance, LIHTC tax credits, and partnership tax returns. Personal matters brought me back to Springfield and I was made aware of the passing of a local tax practitioner. He had run his business for 40 years and it was facing closing. I took a leap of faith and purchased the business and I've been the owner of TPH Strategies for about 19 months now and it's been the best decision I've made.

How did your UIS education prepare you for your career?

I credit Dr.Karadas for my positive experience at UIS. His passion for finance and for teaching fostered a welcoming environment where curiosity thrived. It was okay to fail in his classes, but it wasn't okay not to try. I think that lesson really stuck with me and it's what has allowed me to grow so much. I have a love for learning and all the professors at UIS helped cultivate that love and they encouraged it. I feel lucky because the people in my cohort were also amazing. They pushed me to study hard and taught me valuable skills about leading a team and working in diverse groups.

Do you have any cool hobbies/side projects you'd like to tell us about?

I love to paint! It's such a freeing and relaxing experience for me. Our home is covered in original artwork from my wife and me. Painting has taught me patience and how to accept what is. Sometimes the end product isn't what you're expecting and that's okay! At the end of the day, it's beautiful and it's yours. I also love playing my alto saxophone and playing video games.

What are some life lessons you'd like to share with current students?

It's okay to have a plan for yourself, but real success comes when you take advantage of the opportunities that come your way.
