Visiting a college campus can be helpful in deciding what school is the right fit for you. As a tour guide and current student at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS), these are my tips to make the most of your campus visit that go beyond the standard tour.
Grab a Meal at the Student Union
Looking to get a taste of eating on campus? I recommend trying the food for yourself! View the menu beforehand to get an idea of what daily specials the dining hall will be serving the day of your tour. Maybe you’d rather have a quick coffee? Check out the Starbucks on the second level of the Student Union.

Visit the Building for Your Major
Every campus tour at UIS visits the University Hall Building (UHB) where many students have classes. You can also request to visit other academic buildings on campus. Visiting the building that houses your major lets you see firsthand what your classes will look like and what resources are available to you. If you are not sure what college your major falls under, your tour guide will be happy to help.
Speak with Financial Aid
Meeting with the Office of Financial Aid is a great opportunity that many students do not take advantage of during their campus visit. These staff members can help you better understand the cost of attendance and answer questions about loans, scholarships, and military and veteran aid.
Watch an Athletic Event
One way to experience student life during your campus visit is by watching a game. The UIS Athletic Calendar displays all the sporting events hosted throughout the year, which can be helpful in deciding what day to schedule your tour. Especially if you are a prospective student-athlete, attending a game can allow you to visualize yourself as a player by giving you a glimpse into the team’s dynamics and culture. Help Protect the Prairie by cheering on your future Prairie Stars!
Other Things to Do Before Leaving Campus
- Pick up some swag. The UIS Bookstore can be a great place to go if you are looking for some school merchandise.
- Visit the Koi pond.
- Take a picture by the Colonnade and the Abe Lincoln statue.

Explore the Springfield Area
If you have time after your campus visit, consider exploring the local Springfield area to discover what student life is like outside of the classroom. The Springfield Visitors Bureau can be a great resource to discover restaurants, hotels, shops, entertainment, and more.
